Academic Report on Key Technologies and Engineering Practices of Modern Timber Structures Held at Suqian University

On the afternoon of January 3, 2025, at the invitation of Prof. Li Quan from the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Prof. Yue Kong from Nanjing Tech University delivered an academic report titled "Key Technologies and Engineering Practices of Modern Timber Structures" at Suqian University. The event, chaired by Vice Dean Peng Ningbo, attracted a large number of faculty and students.

Prof. Yue first addressed the durability of timber structures, introducing his research on high-performance wood-gypsum composite materials. Using waste wood chips from fast-growing Chinese fir and gypsum as raw materials, he developed an innovative two-stage manufacturing process involving adhesive pre-forming and moisture-enhanced curing. The resulting product meets both industry standards and structural board specifications in terms of mechanical performance.

Regarding fire resistance in light timber structures, Prof. Yue provided an in-depth analysis of their performance under fire conditions. He explained the pyrolysis process of various wood materials, the formation of char layers, and their impact on structural integrity, while also sharing his team’s latest findings on fire-resistant design methods and protective technologies.

Additionally, he explored sound insulation in timber structures, systematically analyzing key factors affecting acoustic performance—such as material properties, structural configurations, and sound wave propagation—and presented practical optimization strategies based on real-world engineering cases.

Prof. Yue’s report combined theoretical depth with practical insights, offering an intellectual feast that broadened the academic horizons of attendees. The session underscored Suqian University’s commitment to fostering cutting-edge knowledge exchange in architectural engineering.
