The Geomatics Engineering major at Suqian University was launched in 2004. Following the institution's formal accreditation as a full-time undergraduate university by China's Ministry of Education in 2014, the major evolved into one of the university's first independently administered undergraduate majors, initiating its own admission process. It was obtained authority to award Bachelor of Engineering degrees in 2018. In 2020, the major was recognized as a first-class undergraduate major construction site in Jiangsu Province, a competitive program supporting the development of excellence in higher education, which marks that the major has gained substantial recognition. After rigorous evaluation of curriculum innovation, faculty development, and educational outcomes, the project successfully completed the acceptance in 2024.

In accordance with the construction concept of "focusing on demand, highlighting characteristics, broadening the foundation, and strengthening innovation", this major actively responds to the changes in the surveying and mapping geographic information industry and the new round of scientific and technological revolution, and continuously promotes professional construction. Rooted in the university's mission as a regionally anchored, application-focused institution, the major strategically aligns with three pivotal dimensions of the overall national security concept, which are resource security, ecological security, and social security. Through careful analysis of regional development requirements and leveraging institutional academic strengths, we have established three specialized tracks, namely natural resource and environmental security, geological environment security, and engineering health security and a diversified talent cultivation model is constructed. The major cultivates high-quality applied professionals with robust engineering acumen, practical proficiency, and innovative thinking. These specialists demonstrate solid foundations in mathematics, physics, and geomatics engineering principles, coupled with systematic mastery of theories, knowledge and skills in the discipline. Equipped with advanced problem-solving methodologies and cross-cultural communication skills, graduates are positioned to engage in the design, production, research and development, and management of geomatics engineering in critical domains including natural resource, city construction, and geological survey.

The major currently maintains a faculty team of 15 full-time professors and lecturers, including 2 professor, 2 associate professors, 2 senior engineers, 1 senior experimentalist and 8 lecturer. The academic composition demonstrates strong qualifications, with 7 doctoral degree holders and 5 faculty members actively pursuing doctoral studies. Notably, 100% of teaching staff possess substantial engineering practice experience in relevant industries. In addition, 5 part-time teachers from industries and enterprises have been hired to strengthen the connection between academic instruction and professional practice.

The major has maintained uninterrupted enrollment since its establishment in 2004, cultivating 839 graduates to date. Most of alumni have evolved into key technical personnel in production and scientific research of employers. With an annual intake of approximately 90 undergraduates, the major currently sustains an active learning community of 272 matriculated students.

After years of construction and development, the Geomatics Engineering major has made great progress in various aspects such as professional construction, talent training, faculty team building, teaching and research. The overall educational conditions of this major have obvious advantages among all majors at Suqian University. Compared with similar majors at other universities in the province and across the country, it also has certain characteristics and advantages.
